Most people meet quadratics as a formula to memorize and a set of problems to grind. That works until the problems change shape, and then the memorized steps fall apart. The fix is to build the picture first.

What a quadratic actually is

A quadratic describes a curve, a parabola, that opens up or down. The equation is just a compact way of asking "where does this curve cross zero?" Once you can see the parabola in your head, the algebra stops feeling arbitrary.
